Silver Care
All sterling silver jewelry is stamped with either a ".925" or "sterling silver" mark. ".925" represents the silver content of all sterling silver. Silver is a very pliable metal, therefore .075 of another, stronger metal is added to "harden" the silver.
Sterling silver does tarnish. It is a simple fact of nature. Silver tarnish is caused by a reaction between the silver and oxygen and sulfur. Exposure to air brings oxidation which results in tarnish. It is also caused by swimming while wearing your sterling silver jewelry, and using hair spray while wearing your sterling silver jewelry. In order to minimize tarnish, you should wrap your silver with a non-buffered/acid-free tissue paper and store in an airtight container such as a polyethylene zip-top bag. Storage within specially marked "anti-tarnish" containers is also helpful, as are anti-tarnish strips.
Avoid abrasive polishes, dips or scrubbing tools (such as steel wool). For minor cleaning, use a soft silver polishing cloth. There are many commercially developed cleaners for sale that will work well but it is important to know the side effects of the cleaner, what it will work on and what it won't work on. Keep in mind the various parts of your jewelry piece. Gemstones can react differently to cleaners than sterling silver.
Silver, when properly maintained, will yield generations of enjoyment.
Wearing your jewelry is a good way to help keep it in good condition so enjoy your sterling silver jewelry and wear it often! |
